And as usual, the latest chapter is nothing to do with historical accuracy, but rather with providing a comprehensive account of all of those people involved in a single event that had major political, social and cultural consequences for world opinion (as it would be if they were a single people). We can be sure that the author of the chapter is well aware of the importance of making this history available as a study aid and would not waste our time trying to figure out its meaning and implications.

In a recent post, I have discussed a proposed survey of a few hundred people living within the United States. It is not the first such survey. This is certainly the most interesting, the most comprehensive and certainly the most valuable and detailed, as far as it is possible to tell. Of course, I want to emphasize the lack of any attempt to do anything to establish a relationship between the respondents and the events of the day in question. It is simply a list of the events, which we can use in a variety of ways and which will show us a picture of the historical event. Even if our survey were intended for one purpose only, it might be thought that some sort of historical correlation is already apparent by looking at a subset of the respondents.

We don't have any idea, of course. We are left with a list of individuals (or groups) and a series of names; we see that people tend to appear in certain locations, but in some cases, the locations may be the same (as with the case of Henry V, who was born in Bristol at the end of the 17th century and then moved to the US). And the nature of some of the interviews does not correspond exactly with how people described what occurred, or who the people were in those locations. However, the overall tone seems to be supportive, somewhat apologetic, and perhaps quite positive about the individuals involved, but, in some cases, the tone changes sharply. And the questions ask for very specific information about certain individuals, sometimes specifically. We don't know that any person is going to be selected to answer all these questions, nor can we imagine that anyone would say that someone, any person, is the sole or dominant person in an area where there was much discussion about the historical event. Of course, there are certainly people (and groups) that would choose to name specific individuals for interviews, for example.

That the author of the survey and the authors of all subsequent reports on events in the US were aware that the results might not quite mirror reality does not change anything, but it did make the overall picture quite dispiriting and rather confusing for those on the receiving end of the information.
